Will you donate on the charity's website,

by e-transfer, or

by mailing a cheque?

Online: Most charities use an online transaction service to collect donations by credit card on their website. The transaction handler may charge the donor or the charity a small fee. Transaction handlers save the charity some administrative costs by issuing your charitable tax receipt on behalf of the charity. It can take up to a month for some charities to receive the donation from the transaction handler.

E-transfer: Some charities accept donations by e-transfer. The charity incurs no transaction fees and receives your donation right away. The charity has the administrative cost associated with issuing you a tax receipt. Many people who pay a monthly banking fee can send e-transfers for free.

By mailing a cheque: The charity incurs no transaction fees and the charity receives your donation within a week of the cheque being mailed. The charity has the administrative cost associated with issuing you a tax receipt.
